The Friends of the PS Industry Inc. (FOTI) is a passionate volunteer group dedicated to preserving, maintaining and operating the 115-year-old heritage paddle steamer PS Industry. The vessel is fully licensed to carry passengers and offers river cruises that showcase the beauty and wildlife of the River Murray.
Volunteers are at the heart of keeping this historic steam-powered vessel operational and accessible to the community and visitors.
What roles are avaliable?
A wide range of volunteer roles are available across operations, maintenance and administration.
No prior experience is necessary for many roles, with training provided for those interested in learning new skills or gaining maritime qualifications.
Volunteer roles include:
- On-water operations:
- Deckhands (opportunity to log sea time toward maritime qualifications)
- Engineers and assistant engineers (supporting steam engine operations)
- 1st Mates and Masters (for those with relevant certifications or working toward them)
- Maintenance and technical support:
- General vessel maintenance (carpentry, painting, welding, cleaning)
- Mechanical and engineering support
- Safety checks and upkeep of equipment
- General support roles:
- General hands assisting across all areas
- Wood collection and preparation for the steam engine
- Work boat operators (licence required)
- Administration and coordination:
- Committee roles (Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer)
- Crew roster coordination
- Purser and Quartermaster duties
Volunteers can also gain valuable experience and training toward certifications such as Marine Engine Driver, Coxswain, Skipper or Master tickets, including steam endorsements.
Time commitment
- Cruise operations: typically one Sunday per month
- Maintenance: Tuesday morning working bees (from 8am)
- Flexible involvement: weekly, monthly or occasional, depending on availability
How to get involved?
You can get involved by attending a Tuesday morning working bee, visiting the vessel on a cruise day to meet the crew, or leaving your details at the Renmark Visitor Centre.
New volunteers are supported with training and guidance in vessel operations, safety and maintenance, with opportunities to build skills and gain relevant qualifications.
You’ll be welcomed into a friendly group of like-minded people who are passionate about preserving and operating this historic paddle steamer.
