Why do we need an Animal Management Plan?

The Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 requires all councils in South Australia to prepare a plan for managing dogs and cats in their area. This plan outlines where dogs can be exercised off-leash, where they must be on a leash, and where they may not be allowed.

Renmark Paringa Council can also create local by-laws to support animal management. These by-laws were renewed in 2024/25. We work together with neighbouring councils to meet our responsibilities under the Act. This Animal Management Plan helps ensure a balanced approach that supports pet owners, protects the wider community, and promotes responsible dog and cat ownership across our region.
